The horse was so fierce that no one could approach him. King Philip II refused to buy the animal. Alexander was about twelve at the time. He told his father he wanted to buy the horse and was positive he could tame him. Philip II and his men laughed and made fun of the boy.

Alexander saw that the horse was afraid of shadows. He gently turned him to face the sun. Then Alexander began to stroke and talk to him. In one skillful leap, the boy bounded onto the horse’s back. Speaking gently to him, Alexander coaxed the stallion into a gallop. From then on, Alexander was the only person who could ever ride him. He was called Bucephalus (byoo-SEFF-uh-liss), which meant ox head.
